Pool heating in Mallorca: heat pumps, covers and a longer swimming season
How to extend the swimming season at a Mallorca villa: heat pumps, thermal covers, target temperatures, real running costs and maintenance.
An unheated outdoor pool in Mallorca is genuinely comfortable for a shorter period than most owners assume. Water warms up far more slowly than air: in May, with twenty-five degree days and full sun, the pool still sits around twenty degrees, and from the second half of September it cools quickly even while the weather still feels like summer. In practice, the comfortable swimming window without technical support runs roughly from mid-June to mid-September. Heating the pool extends that window by two to four months, which is precisely why it has become one of the most requested upgrades on villas in the south-west of the island. For an owner who lives here or comes over for long weekends, it means using the pool at Easter, through October and on some November weekends. For anyone letting under an ETV licence the argument is even more direct: April, May and October are shoulder-season months in which a heated pool appears as a search filter on the booking portals and wins reservations against an otherwise identical villa, while also supporting a stronger nightly rate outside the August peak.
The dominant technology today is the pool-specific heat pump, or air-source heating. The logic is simple: it extracts energy from the outside air and transfers it to the water, so for every unit of electricity consumed it delivers several units of heat. In the mild temperatures of Balearic autumn and spring it works in its optimal range with very good efficiency, and it loses performance as the air gets colder in midwinter. Three decisions make the difference when choosing equipment. The first is sizing, which depends on pool volume, exposed surface, orientation and wind, the temperature lift you want and, above all, whether the pool will be covered or not; an undersized unit never reaches the setpoint in spring, while an oversized one inflates the installation cost for no benefit. The second is inverter technology and sound level, a critical point on urbanisation plots where the unit ends up close to bedrooms or the neighbour boundary, and where municipal noise ordinances are worth checking before you buy. The third, very specific to Mallorca, is the heat exchanger material: with salt chlorination and a marine environment you should insist on titanium and shelter the unit from salt-laden breeze. Alternatives still exist — solar thermal panels, almost free to run but dependent on sun and demanding roof area, or an exchanger connected to the house boiler, which heats very fast but at a high fuel cost — and on many villas the most efficient answer is a heat pump paired with photovoltaic self-consumption.
The most expensive mistake is heating without covering. Most of the heat an outdoor pool loses escapes through the water surface, above all through overnight evaporation, when the gap between warm water and cool air is at its widest. With no cover, the heat pump spends the night replacing what the pool gives back to the sky, and consumption soars without the temperature holding steady. A bubble thermal blanket is the cheapest option and already cuts losses very noticeably; the step change is an automatic slatted cover, either integrated into the pool or housed in an external box, which as well as retaining heat keeps out leaves and dust, reduces chemical consumption and limits top-up water lost to evaporation — no small matter on an island with recurring restrictions on irrigation and filling. On high-end properties you also see polycarbonate enclosures, which allow near year-round use in exchange for a visual impact that has to be weighed carefully. Beyond energy, any rigid cover adds real protection against accidental falls, which in a family house or a holiday rental matters as much as the savings.
On cost and operation, expectations should be realistic. Comfortable bathing temperature sits around twenty-seven to twenty-eight degrees, and there is no point going higher: each additional degree means an appreciable increase in consumption, because losses grow with the gap to ambient temperature. The investment splits into two blocks — the heating equipment with its hydraulic and electrical installation, and the cover, which in an automatic version can cost as much as or more than the heat pump itself — and the return is measured differently depending on use: on a rental villa you calculate it on extra nights sold in the shoulder season, while on a private home it is simply quality of life. Maintenance-wise, a heat pump needs a serious annual service: cleaning the evaporator, which picks up salt and dust in coastal locations, checking flow and the hydraulic bypass, monitoring circuit pressure and watching for scale, because the island hard water is tough on exchangers. In winter, if the unit will not be used, it should be drained and protected. And one practical scheduling tip: plan the installation in winter or early spring, when installers have availability, never in June, which is when everyone discovers at the same time that they want the water at twenty-eight degrees.
